It's no secret that the iconic motorcycle brand has been moving in a new direction. Powered by the potent 85 hp parallel twin engine, the F 800 GS Adventure has no problem whatsoever leaving civilization far behind it. With a torque rating of 61 lb-ft, this adventure motorcycle has enough power to overcome even the toughest off-road challenge.

Touring & adventure bikes are like road bikes that have been specially adapted to carry loads over longer distances or for adventures through rougher terrains. It's therefore no surprise that a touring or adventure bike can readily double as a sound commuter bike.

The V-Strom is very much like the Kawasaki Versys in that it is more of a themed bike rather than a true adventure motorcycle. The optional trails require intermediate to advanced off-road riding skills. No matter how you like to spend your time, you'll find a Honda Adventure motorcycle to be the perfect partner.

But top of the priority list would be proper off-road tyres: the dual purpose' tyres fitted as standard are too road orientated. With only 5.5 inches of travel in the front and 4.7 inches in the rear,it's really more of a street bike with adventure styling. If you are a smaller rider, then a 250cc may be your only option or if you are primarily looking for a lightweight dual sport bike to link up trails. In my opinion there are many more important areas to consider such as weight, seat height, engine capacity etc when choosing your adventure bike, being air cooled or watercooled shouldn't really be considered a showstopper.

Disc brakes, especially hydraulic enduro discs, offer more power which provides more confidence when riding off-road and are useful in mixed conditions. They also sell quality Outdoor Equipment, and can provide travel logistics and custom tour iteneraries for your next adventure of a lifetime.

Some people feel there aren't enough smaller motorcycles, training is too expensive, or that the industry doesn't make motorcycling appealing enough to possible young riders, entry level riders or women riders. OK so going fast on a enduro bike needs a bit of skill, but let's not over egg the pudding - modern dirt bikes are really easy to use off-road.

If you predominantly ride tarmac and gravel roads all within cellphone range then reliability is most likely not as big a factor as someone embarking on ride across Russia. When your road suddenly turns to muddy ruts it's often enough to make some riders turn around and head back the other way. These motorcycles are usually heavier and more durable than the models derived from off-road motorcycles. Typical lightweight adventure bikes normally weigh in at sub 140 kg (fuelled without gear).
